Jellyfin is a completely free and open source media center, which will allow you to manage how you want to enjoy all your audiovisual content. The program is a direct descendant of Emby version 3.5.2, which was the last open source version before moving to proprietary code. It was due to this change, in fact, that Jellyfin was born, with the aim of continuing to provide maximum transparency to its users.
At first glance Jellyfin is an elegant media center, which offers a ton of free and royalty-free content. At your disposal you'll find a good handful of movies, TV series and music, all of it royalty free and completely legal. However, you'll also be able to collect, store and manage all the extra content you want, in a similar way to Plex or the aforementioned Emby.
It's important to emphasize that Jellyfin does not monitor the activities of its users and does not store their information in any database. One of the pillars of the app is openness and transparency, and any information they may collect (such as bug reports) is completely voluntary. Likewise, Jellyfin does not make money from any audiovisual material, so everything it offers is free of charge as well as being royalty-free. Any other audiovisual content you want to play is entirely up to you.
During the playback of audiovisual material you'll find tons of interesting options that will make your life easier. For example, you can adjust the playback speed, in case you want to make it through a part of a movie or show more quickly. You'll also be able to use syncPlay to watch movies online with friends, and even change the aspect ratio of a movie.
Jellyfin is a very powerful media center, which not only offers a spectacular range of features, but also has an elegant and practical interface. The app is also cross-platform, so you can use it on a multitude of devices and operating systems. Most importantly, it's completely free and open source.
